3 New Jersey men face drug charges after being nabbed in police operation
Three New Jersey residents have found themselves facing drug charges for allegedly patronizing an open-air drug market in Camden. They were just three of a reported 142 individuals arrested during a police sweep called “Operation Padlock.”
The three men, all said to be in their 20s, now face a drug charge characterized as a disorderly persons offense under state statutes. The designated charge is loitering for the purpose of obtaining a controlled dangerous substance.
The arrests were publicized by prosecutors. They were said to be part of a coordinated effort among police, community groups and public works to rid drugs from specified areas. Law enforcement officials have used these arrests to encourage citizens to call in tips. It was indicated that two people were paid $500 each for their assistance in finding PCP dealers, though there is no indication these three men possessed any drugs or were even in the midst of a purported drug transaction.
The specifics of the drug charge allegations against the three men were not disclosed. Rather, prosecutors took the opportunity to announce that the community program has resulted in arrests of more than 250 individuals as well as the seizure of cash and property. One Chinese restaurant was said to have been closed due to the operation. However, no details were revealed as to how many of the arrests actually resulted in convictions for those charged.
Any New Jersey drug charge is a significant problem. Those that end up convicted may face fines and potential jail time. Further, a criminal record could impede any future employment efforts and can even interfere with housing needs.
Nevertheless, there is a substantial difference between a police accusation and a criminal conviction, and each individual facing a criminal proceeding has the right to challenge any testimony or physical evidence offered against them. Indeed, in an environment where financial rewards are offered for tips to authorities, there is a potential for abuse and false accusations.
