New Jersey teen in big trouble after alleged BB gun vandalism

What used to be considered a child’s toy now requires legal documentation to use or purchase. A juvenile has been charged with a number of New Jersey crimes for allegedly firing a BB gun into school windows. The police who made the arrest point to safety concerns as the reason for the serious charges. With the case now transferred to the Ocean County Juvenile Court for review as a juvenile crime, the boy has been released into his mother’s custody.

A 15-year-old Point Borough, New Jersey, boy allegedly fired a BB handgun into windows at Memorial Middle School on July 10. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, unlawful possession of a handgun of school grounds and criminal mischief under New Jersey law. He allegedly caused $2,600 in damage to five school windows.

According to a police captain, a BB gun is a firearm under New Jersey law, which led to the unlawful possession charges. The captain explained that proper permitting and identification is required to purchase BB guns. To purchase a BB rifle, a firearm identification card is required and a BB handgun requires a handgun permit. Even then, a minor may only use the guns at a firing range and under adult supervision.

The police captain noted that New Jersey laws are strict because BB guns are dangerous and have caused severe injuries and even death. The juvenile crime case will now proceed through the New Jersey Juvenile Court. The 15-year-old boy is entitled to a fair and impartial hearing, as well as the right to present his side of the story.
