Drug charges and arrest following reckless driving traffic stop in Parsippany

What initially started as a routine traffic stop for reckless driving resulted in drug charges issued by Parsippany Police. Reportedly, a police officer stopped a vehicle around 1:30 a.m. that had crossed over a double yellow line. As the officer approached the window of the vehicle, he says he could smell an odor that was similar to that of burnt marijuana. He searched the vehicle at which time he found a cigar that contained the illegal substance, which prompted the subsequent drug charge.

The 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene. She was issued a summons for possession of a dangerous controlled substance in a vehicle as well as for the failure to keep right on the road. Her passenger, a 20-year-old male from Parsippany, was also arrested. He received drug charges for marijuana possession of 50 grams or less.

Both individuals face some consequences related to these drug charges in Parsippany, if in fact they are convicted of the allegations. There are a number of ways to challenge the evidence that the police and prosecution seek to use, and in many cases, this starts with the search conducted of a vehicle. In a number of instances, certain required procedures might be overlooked which could possibly result in the claimed evidence being ruled inadmissible in court. Whether this may happen in this particular case is yet to be decided, but the pair will want to be knowledgeable in all aspects of their drug charge case to protect all of their legal interests and be sure to address the charges to refrain from compounding the issue.
